Magellan TRX7 GPS Review

Magellan TRX7We had a chance to test out the new Magellan eXplorist TRX7 GPS Navigator on our recent  adventure to River Neck Acres ATV park located in Florence, South Carolina. The Magellan eXplorist, which utilizes a weatherproof 7” LCD touchscreen display, along with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity,  fit perfect on our Can Am outlander 1000 XMR. We also used it on the trip down with motorhome.

The eXplorist TRX7 packs a lot of maps, trails and POI’s on board. Magellan designed the TRX7 with a powerful Dual Core Cortex-A9 processor, and 1G Mobile DDR2 memory, running on Android 4.2, to ensure a fast and smooth off-road navigation experience.  Built in Camera is now available.

Availability and Pricing

Built for Off Road Safety

Users can build a route by filtering trails based on difficulty, terrain, obstacles and user rating. One of the greatest features is the backtrack function allowing you to return to the starting point so the chance of getting lost is greatly reduced.  During your trip you can mark way points to show campsites, gas stations, watering holes or food stashes.

Maps

The TRX7 comes with over 50,000 trails and growing preloaded on the unit. One of the best features is the crowdsourcing of trails. Users can upload there tracks from recent rides and publish these to the TRX trailhead website.  The base maps have high resolution 3d Terrian, POI’s to (include gas, food, lodging, healthcare), and 2d topo maps with contour elevation lines.  Users can also take pictures and save them with the waypoints on the units that have a camera built in.

Impressions

The unit is easy to operate and see in the daylight. We were riding in mostly mud and water. There were several times the unit went underwater and due to the IP67 design it continued working.  We were riding in a new ATV park that was just opened that weekend so we had the chance to mark new trails. This was an easy process and we were able to name our trails  along with rating them in under a minute.  The next day we were able to export those tracks on an SD card and load them into the other units we had on site.

Our next adventure will be the trials of West Virginia. We have over 500 tracks that we have uploaded to the TRX trailhead website for the WV trails.
